When we got to Shanghai it was freezing, so of course we would need to go shopping to buy some warm clothes! You don't get 4 degree cold in Sydney. So did some shopping and what not. It was definitely a test of where my language skills were at. Let's just say, I needed some improvement. Nanjing Road was really amazing, so many stores, including ones which are yet to open in Australia. Though one thing I really needed to get used to was keeping my bag in front of me at all times, gotta watch out for pick pockets.

Oh right, and the staring. I think its safe to say we all knew there was no I way going to blend in here. Let's use an analogy shall we. Hmm, brownie. Yes, I am the brownie among all the vanilla cakes. That'll do. Its getting late, can't think of anything better than that. And I love brownies and cakes :)
Basically, these stares I was receiving were not in any way subtle. It continued regardless of whether or not I made eye contact. At first I found it very off putting, but now I often stare back with a smile. This usually results in a returned smile, in which case I cheer a little on the inside. Otherwise there's just continued staring, with no change of expression...in these cases I look away...very awkward. Haha.
People here are really kind and friendly to me though! This statement reigns true when one overlooks the staring of course. But when I got to the point of conversing with the local people, they encouraged me to speak Chinese to them, and helped me to communicate better, gave directions etc. This compensates for the sometimes bothersome staring on a day to day basis.
Shall continue later! This time I'll leave you with a picture of a tree in the shape of a dome, how do they keep it like this? Daily hedge clipping maybe. Lol Hmm perhaps will talk about dorms, Chinese class and other endeavours in the next entry. Until next time! Keep it real! :)
